When I was approached by Daniel from Exceler8 Designs to create a new logo for him, I was given free rein to design anything I wanted as long as I could include either blue or purple into the logo.

I began drawing some ideas on my tablet as I felt that it was much easier to use compared to pen and paper. Originally, I tried to use the concept of motion to relate to the brand name however the ideas I came up with didn't look like they would convert into an effective design so I decided to use the '8' as the central theme instead.

For this logo, the '8' is inverted to the rest of the logo as it is the only number used in the brand. I made the '8' larger than the letters so that people will focus their attention to the number. In a way, I have tried to make the number an icon, like the Nike 'swoosh' or the McDonalds 'M'. I also wanted to made the '8' larger because if it were the same size as the letters, then it might end up being mistaken for the letter 'B'.

When it came time to add colour to the logo, I wanted to choose a blue and a purple that would be easy to read on light and dark backgrounds. If the shade is too dark then it would become hard to read on dark backgrounds. If it is too light then the colour would look washed out. In the end, I found a colour that worked and used it on the '8' to make it stand out even more. The only time that colour is used on the text is for the gradient logos as I felt that it could really strengthen the overall look.

Overall, I am pleased with the final result. I was able to try a new method with using gradients and I created my second logo that contains an inverted character. I believe the logo looks quite strong and it works well with either colours specified.
